As a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Disney cartoons and movies on VHS. I never liked the movie Fantasia and was sort of ambivalent towards The Jungle Book. One of my favorites, shamefully was Aladdin because I thought that Robin Williams was so funny as the Genie (and I still do). But, per usual, my intellectual growth through my academic studies always seems to ruin my childhood joys. On the DVD version of Aladdin, Disney editted the opening song that has the line, “Where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face.” Who would have a problem with that? Jim Crow was my favorite character from Dumbo. A Black Crow named Jim, during the time of segregation, when anti-lynching laws were voted down by Congress. Zippity Doo-Dah, Zippity Ay, Wonderful Feeling, Feeling this Way! I am still looking for a copy of the Disney’s totallyliberal progressive anti-racist propaganda, Song of The South. I feel so frustrated trying to find a movie about the good old days that Black people had after the Civil War. With all their whistling and talking to animals!
I am sooooooooooo excited about Disney’s The Frog Princess. Just leave it to Old Walt Disney to join the struggle for civil rights.
