Patriotism and Mastership

Last year for Independence Day, I quoted James Cone on a definition of freedom. Today, I present the words of enslaved Africans, who put patriotism in its proper place; they were patriots to the empire of God, the one not of this world. It also happens to be the lyrics to one of my favorite sorrow songs , “There is something about that Name.”

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus There’s just something about that name MASTER, Savior, Jesus Like the fragrance after the rain Jesus, Jesus, Jesus Let all heaven and earth proclaim Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away But there’s something about that name.
