Hey Justin,

Thanks for stopping by.

At the time I wrote this post, I did not even realize why there were some people who did not like The Office. I have friends from 2 different PhD programs who made me change my mind; their series on The Office

http://themothchase.wordpress.com/the-office/

opened up my eyes.

The problem with Michael Scott is that he never suffers the consequences of his actions. Maybe that will change in the episodes ahead, but he basically gets a free pass.

I have actually seen several episodes of House. House is quite interesting. I will need to view more episodes, to see what you are speaking of, but I know the "I am not a racist/sexist since I hate everyone."

I find it interesting that you brought up the character of Michael Scott. While it can be argued that the Office employs a variety of forms of sensationalism regarding race and gender issues among other things, the character of Michael Scott has been one of my favorite characters in television's dialogue regarding race relations. His innocence - how he doesn't really know that he's doing anything wrong or why he's "wrong" - is an interesting thing to study. It reminds us of children and how they deal with difference.

Have you ever watched the show House? I find Gregory House to be another interesting character in television's dialogue regarding race. He's basically outlined as a man who has shot the moon, who pokes fun at anyone regardless of who they are, using their blackness, whiteness, et. al., their otherness, as a hook for his biting criticism and humor. Since he is not considered racist toward any particular group or sexist regarding one sex or the other, some would say that he is beyond the criticism of individuals who have more particular biases.

Whatever your view, these characters are really good nuclei for a beginning discussion of race. I'm not totally caught up on your blog, but I would love to hear your perspective on certain lead characters (including Michael Scott and Gregory Scott) and how they deal with race.

Rod, <br/>This is an important post on the subjects of racism and [the need for] diversity. As you articulated well, Cone has been saying the same thing for many years, that we need to talk, yes to talk about race and the past. I was particularly struck by this sentence:<br/>"We, as citizens of the world’s lone superpower, have had a tendency to forget the history of North American racial injustice by ignoring the heroic narratives of moral exemplars from marginalized communities in order to maintain Euro-American homogeneity within colleges, universities, businesses, and churches."<br/><br/>Keep up the good work,<br/>celucien

I'm digging the blog Roddog. Best on the net. But I have to think about the need to worship in interracial settings. I think only whites need to worry about that right now.
